Happy Holidays! I hope everyone had a great one! I adapted my schedule this week because I am doing my 10 miles this week and I have my first race on New Years Day… so they needed some spacing out. The key word I am going to keep in mind while running is: Listen. I did not do that in the past, but pushed myself too hard…  and led to my knee surgeries. I need to listen to my body and adapt goals. I don’t need to run continuously. I don’t need to run a certain pace and I certainly don’t need to keep moving if my knee starts to hurt. I’ve given myself a 30 second guideline. If my knee (or any other part of my body) hurt for more than 30 seconds then it’s time to slow down to a comfortable speed.

I was so excited to get a couple things that I thought would be great for my running. My father got me a Red Safety Light that I can wear while I’m running in the dark as well as a iPhone Armband (because I usually just hold it lol).  I bought a bright green running Jacket to help me stand out a little better too. My splurge was actually some compression recovery socks, which promote circulation after a workout. I have read they are better for the recovery afterwards and don’t really do anything while you are running. But I suppose after running the last thing you want to do is try and pull these on over your sweaty legs. Just sayin’.

My FIRST registration!

I registred for a race! I am set to start 2012 with a New Years Day race- The Brazen Marathon, 10K/5K. I will be doing the 10K to figure out how I perform in a road/trail race before I think about a half marathon. I’m also excited because it’s right over the Bay Bridge in Oakland.

I have found a good training schedule and just completed my 8 mile run yesterday at a pace of 9.44 miles/hour to make for 1 hour 15.55 minutes! My legs were pretty sore the rest of the day but to prevent injury I’ve been focusing a lot on stretching before and after. Say no to shin splintssss

My first injury since I started working out in May occurred this past week though.. I have an appointment this coming Tuesday at a Neurology Clinic to figure out if it’s a pinched nerve in my shoulder or some kind of tear. AHH! My knee feels great though (had two knee surgeries in high school) that I swear are because of these shoes I have been using: New Balance Minimus! They make me happy.

Minimus is a whole new approach to footwear, a place on the spectrum from barefoot running to the traditional maximum-cushioning running shoe. Inspired by Good Form Running and designed to be worn with or without socks. With only a 4mm drop from heel to toe, as little as a third of that of a traditional running shoe, the Minimus collection holds a world of discovery for neutral runners as well as those with gait issues or chronic injury to conquer by learning better form.

I have a very high arch in both feet so I did actually but a “Orthopedic Knee” insert from Walgreen for under $10 to put in it- but they fit like a glove! In my running club, there is someone with each color of the shoe- it’s pretty hilarious. This week with the Run Chuggers we ran around the Embarcadero and AT&T park in our longest and fastest run yet! (8.4 miles/hour)!!! Even though I talked with my daughter, Amy, on the phone for a little while I was just enjoying the evening and taking in the pace I set.  Have a great weekend!

Run Chuggers

In October I joined a running club and they call themselves the Run Chuggers. ( Why? Because we meet at a bar and end up at a bar. Their slogan is.. “a little running.. a little drinking.” A little silly to drink after running, especially because it’s between 7-9pm and no one has had dinner. But it’s exciting to run in the dark with a bunch of friendly people and the time goes fast because we all pair up and talk the whole way. I don’t normally go because it’s Wednesday nights and with Amy .. I just like to get home to her as soon as she is out of school. But she is visiting family in Texas so here I am filling my time and not worrying about being home! I admit last time I stayed strong and only had water at the bar but this time I had champagne with pomegranate juice … so dang good after a run.

Today was my big end of the week run. I did 7 miles in 66.7 minutes! Just the start to my half marathon training. A mile added every week with 3-4 runs a week. I am very excited because; I have never knowingly run that far in my life, I didn’t feel like crap huffing and puffing, my knee gave me no trouble and I got to watch ! I wasn’t sure I’d be able to keep up my normal pace but I did : )

In my final sprints at the end I always here my Dad’s voice, “run like the wind, Kelly!”

Today I did my first Bodypump class! I’ve done a Boot Camp class before and I was sore for weeks but today I feel pretty good, that is, after my two hour nap after class. My Ma loves the class so much she goes to a couple different 24 Hour Fitness locations to make a couple classes a week! Go MA!

I’ve been trying to figure out which Marathons I want to train for. There are so many in CA! I Know I want to do the San Francisco Marathon in July 2012!

Hi world!

Today my Ma and I ran across the Golden Gate Bridge! Amazing how living in San Francisco life is so fast-paced that we forget about the beauty around us. Nothing like a brisk run and the wind blowing so hard you don’t even have to try to breath. Beats running at the gym any day.
